Google surprised the technology world a few days ago when it revealed name of the latest version of its Android operating system. It was almost decided that the new version would be called as Key Lime Pie –but eventually the name “KitKat” was announced.

A group of 500 Indian start-up companies was pushing for convincing Google to name Android version 4.4 as Kaju Katli (a popular cashew nuts sweet in India). Google has been following the convention of naming various versions of Android after sweets and deserts in alphabetic order. Previous versions of the Android mobile operating system have been named as: Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich and Jelly Bean.

The campaigners sent boxes of kaju katli to Larry Page (Co-founder of Google), Andy Rubin (co-founder of Android Inc.) and Amit Singhal (Senior VP and Google Fellow). But sweetness and out of this world taste of this Indian sweet could not make the cut with Google.

Now that this group’s request was tossed out of the window –the resilient group is pulling its efforts together to try and get the next Android version named as Ladoo. Ladoo or Laddoo is an iconic and popular sweet in India. Ladoo is usually round in shape and is made of gram flour and sugary syrup.

The group of companies has put up a website for its cause. The website says: “We are committed to see a version of Android that is dedicated after an Indian sweet. With enough advance notice this time, we request you to name the next version of Android as LADOO. We love Ladoo, and we’re sure you will too! So, to make this deal sweeter, we are sending your team a box of ladoos very soon.”

The Android Ladoo campaign is being led by an Indian website called Pricebaba.com. You can support this campaign by signing the petition given on www.ladoo.co .
