Google has rolled out Gmail support for more Indian mobile operators to expand free SMS (short message service) chat. In March this year, Google had launched free SMS chat in India but it was available only on certain mobile networks. Now more networks have been added and users of all the Indian operators can enjoy this service.

How does Gmail SMS Chat Works?

Gmail users now can send a chat message to any mobile number in India. Receiver will get the message on their mobile devices. Then the receiver can send reply via SMS (for which he will be charged as per the standard rate of his mobile operator). Reply will appear in the chat box of the Gmail user. Like regular chat messages, SMS chat will also be saved in chat history. This feature is also available to Google Apps customers. GTalk still does not support sending SMS –however, it is expected that Google will soon enable SMS chat on GTalk as well.

Chat SMS Credit Limit

Every Gmail user will have 50 SMS chat messages to their credit. When you send one SMS chat message, your credit will decrease by one. If you receive a reply from the receiver of your message –your credit limit will go up by five.

Effectively, you can send a maximum of 50 SMS messages without receiving any reply. If you have sent 50 messages but the receiver hasn’t replied even once –you will not be allowed to send anymore messages. If the receiver replies and sends you one message –you will be able to send five more messages.

Also, your credit limit cannot go above 50 (i.e. at any given point of time you can have a maximum credit of 50 SMS chat messages)

One more thing, if you have exhausted your credit limit of 50 SMS –you’ll automatically get credit of one message after every 24 hours. However, there is a workaround to the problem of limit exhaustion. You can send a chat SMS to your own mobile and then reply to this message to increase your credit limit by five.

How to block Gmail SMS

If the receiver does not wish to receive SMS sent from a particular Gmail account –the person can send the BLOCK in reply to such a message. If there is a change of mind sending the word UNBLOCK will resume SMS chat to that particular Gmail account.
