Twitter is a microblogging website that allows users to share their updates in no more than 140 characters. The phenomenal success and popularity of Twitter has made it a very important conversation platform where millions of people speak their mind.

Now authors have begun to take note of and mention tweets in the published material. As properly citing the source of information is very important, we will tell you how to cite a tweet.

The American Psychological Association (APA) style of citation is often used in the fields of social sciences, such as business, criminal justice, economics and law, and medical subjects, including nursing and psychology. If you are using the APA style, you should use the following template to cite a tweet:

@twitter-handle. (year, month day). text-of-the-tweet. Retrieved from full-url-of-the-tweet.

For example:

@TechWelkin. (2017, July 27). iPhone Gestures: 20 Hidden Shortcuts to Use iPhone More Efficiently . Retrieved from https://mobile.twitter.com/!/TechWelkin/status/184996917711876098

Another popular style of citation is the Modern Language Association (MLA) style. This style is more commonly used in the fields of literature, mass communications and media studies etc. For MLA style, use the following template:

@twitter-handle. text-of-tweet. Twitter.com. tweet-publishing-date. Web. date-when-you-accessed-the-tweet.

For example:

@TechWelkin. Use Google Maps to Measure Distances for Jogging, Biking and Hiking. Twitter.com.  21 July 2017. Web. 04 August 2017.

Remember to take care of formatting. Take care about typing periods, spaces and italicizing Twitter.com.
