Manage LinkedIn Profile: Maximum Number of Connections

LinkedIn is the largest online professional network.

LinkedIn is the world’s largest online professional connections network. Unlike social networking websites, like Facebook, LinkedIn exclusively caters the professional networking. You can make connections with people you know and the LinkedIn profile mainly highlights your professional expertise. LinkedIn profile is essentially your online CV with several great features. LinkedIn is also a key network for professional bloggers (especially tech bloggers) as they can get more work through their LinkedIn connections.

LinkedIn users often ask about the maximum number of connections that can be made. And also what to do in case you reach the upper limit of LinkedIn connections. Before I answer this, allow me to say that LinkedIn is not like Facebook or Twitter. Even on sites like Facebook it is better to connect mainly with those whom you know. But on LinkedIn, it is even more important that you carefully make your connections. There is no point in having thousands of unknown connections who are inactive or don’t belong to your field of work.

Anyway, let’s get to the primary question. You can have a maximum of 30,000 connections on LinkedIn. Still, you may find some people having more than 30,000 connections. Earlier, when LinkedIn started, there was no such upper limit. Users who made more than 30k connections before LinkedIn enforced the upper ceiling were allowed to keep their connections.

So, what to do if you have reached the maximum number of LinkedIn connections? Can you accept more invites?

No!, you can not accept anymore invites after reaching 30,000 first level connections.

First of all, I would suggest that you do a “profile audit” of your LinkedIn profile. You should remove idle connections, unwanted connections and unrelated connection. You can make space for new connections by removing some of the existing connections.

You may feel that removal of connections may harm your job search prospects. But it is not so. 30k is a huge number. If you have that many connections, it is almost certain that you’ll certainly find hundreds or may be thousands of connections which are no longer relevant of useful. You should remove exactly these connections.

Mostly, it is not the quantity but the quality of your connections that matters on LinkedIn. Connect with those with whom you can have mutual professional benefits. Remember, LinkedIn is not a friendship oriented platform. It is purely professional. It means business.

There are too many people that you don’t know trying to add you to their network, I don’t know how counterproductive this could be

I reached 30,000 connections many years ago and since that time have had to reject approximately 15,000 more who asked to connect. The absolutely incredible smugness of LinkedIn management to tell me how many connections I have is beyond belief and if there were another start-up similar to LinkedIn coming, and without some stranger telling me how many people I can connect with, than I will jump ship and good riddance to LinkedIn. Until that time comes I will remain a member. But only until LinkedIn is supplanted by another.

i hired a dedicated , adding connection manually, 6 hours per day constantly, around 200 connections added per day. the account was blocked in 3 days. My guess is less than 1K connection per month. I am not going to pay sales navigator any more. it’s a waste.

Lalit, thanks for the post. What would you say is the most efficient way to go about doing a “profile audit”? As you say, 30,000 is a big number.

    Much thanks,
    James

I reached around LinkedIn 9,000 connections when I was told that I had reached my limit. I was told that I should buy a Premium service. I took a trial of Sales Navigator. I found that I still was not able to add to my connections.

So, I bought Business Premium and found that I still was not able to add to my connections. I managed to add 1,500 leads using Sales navigator before I was told that was my limit. The only reason I bought the Business Premium was so that I could continue to add to my connections. Imagine my surprise to find that the limit was still there.

    Am I doing something wrong?

    HI Lalit Kumar,
Thank you for this information. I used to be able to convert my connections to csv or xls, but I cannot find the button anymore.
Does LinkedIn still have this function ?

Once in a while, I want to blast email to my LinkedIn , is it possible to do this from LinkedIn ?
My text blast will be quarterly…

Can I do targeted email / text blast in LinkedIn ?

    Thank you
    Maria

  8. Dave says:

I find that I continually have to re-add people to my network, people close to me that are not clearing me from their contacts. I’m using LinkedIn for iPhone. Does anyone else seem to have this problem? Are idle people automatically disconnected from others?
