Users of WhatsApp, the world’s favorite mobile chat app, sometimes get an exclamation mark near the message sent by them. In our previous articles, we have explained the meaning of various WhatsApp icons (like clock and ticks). Today we will tell you the meaning of exclamation mark in your WhatsApp messages.

Before we get to the point, it is important for you to understand that every WhatsApp message reaches the recipient in the following fashion:

  • You type the message and press the send button. At this stage you get the clock icon.
  • If your mobile Internet connection is on, the message leaves your phone and reaches on the WhatsApp server. At this stage you get a single gray tick icon.
  • If the recipient’s mobile Internet connection is on, the WhatsApp server delivers your message to the recipient phone. At this stage you see the double gray tick icon.
  • When the recipient reads your message, you get the blue double ticks icon, also called the read receipt.

Now, if anything unexpected happens at any of these steps, the exclamation mark would appear in your WhatsApp chat. In fact, exclamation icon in often used in computer and mobile applications to denote an inexplicable or unwanted occurrence.

So, what could be those unexpected events that may cause appearance of exclamation icon? Here we go!

  • Your mobile Internet connection interrupted the dispatch of the message. The dispatch began but stopped mid-way. This sometimes happens when your mobile Internet strength is weak or unstable.
  • WhatsApp chat is now end-to-end encrypted. But if WhatsApp fail to do this end-to-end encryption, it shows an exclamation mark in red circle. It basically means that the message could not be secured with encryption.

How to Remove Exclamation Mark from WhatsApp

The easiest thing to do is to resend the message. If exclamation mark appeared due to connection problem, resending the message when you have a better mobile connection may solve the problem.

If the issue is still not resolved, you may want to uninstall and reinstall WhatsApp again. This will update WhatsApp to its latest version and will remove any conflicts that could be causing encryption problems.

This should solve the problem and you should be able to send smiley emoji to your friend as you would again be chatting!

My friend blocked me on WhatsApp. Later I also blocked her once. Now she is sending me massage and I am not getting even when both of us have unblocked each other on WhatsApp. She is getting red exclamation mark along with a security encryption code change massage. I am getting only a singe tick mark. Messages are not going either way. Can you tell how to fix this issue?

Same issue here. When I want to forward a video from a chat to another the exclamation mark appears and the message is not forwarded. I have to download the video and then sent it as attachment. It s annoying if you have to do it few times. I updated to the last version but same problem. It s the desktop version (I am not using that one of the phone so often)

I blocked a contact more than a week ago, the contact never blocked me back. Hence, as an urgent message it was necessary to send to that person, I unblocked, sent the messages, then after sent I blocked back the contact. I noticed that several minutes later, 2 blue tics appears after each message, but also a red circle with an exclamation mark, moreover only one message doesn’t have the 2 blue tics, only the red circle with an exclamation mark. My question is, did that contact received my urgent message or not? why appears 2 blue tics and a red cicle with an exclamation mark? Thanks

When I get the exclamation mark on my messages, I have to resend the messages manually one by one. Is there any settings do I have change to make the whatsapp resend the failed messages AUTOMATICALLY???

I really need this too… I’m the type that do have a helluva lot of messages so the best thing to do is just to reply offline.

But after a while, it all turns to exclamation mark and I’ll have to manually resend.

Pretty hectic… And stupid I’ll say.

  7. Abuya says:

The red exclamation mark is on the PC bottom task WhatsApp icon, not on any particular message. What message does it refer to? Is it a message I sent or one I received? How do I remove this?
